Dolby Atmos is everywhere now — Disney+, Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video all offer it. But most people with an Atmos subscription are listening through equipment that can't actually reproduce it. Here's how to fix that.
What Dolby Atmos actually is
Traditional surround sound places audio around you horizontally — left, right, front, behind. Dolby Atmos adds height. Sound can now come from above you, which transforms how film soundtracks and certain music releases feel. The helicopter scene, the rain, the crowd — these become genuinely spatial experiences rather than audio effects.
The technology is real and it works remarkably well. But it needs the right equipment to deliver it properly.
What you need for Dolby Atmos
Three things: an Atmos-capable AV receiver, a set of speakers including height channels, and sources that carry an Atmos signal (which most modern 4K Blu-rays and streaming services do).
The AV receiver
This is the heart of the system. It decodes the Atmos signal from your TV or player and distributes audio to each speaker. The Denon AVC-X3800H is one of the most popular Atmos receivers we sell — it handles up to 9.4 channels, has HDMI 2.1 for 8K passthrough, and has the processing power to make Atmos sound exactly as it should. The Yamaha RX-A6A and Marantz Cinema 70s are excellent alternatives at different price points.
When choosing a receiver, look for: the number of channels it can power (5.1.2 minimum for genuine Atmos), HDMI 2.1 connectivity, and the supported formats — Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are the two main ones.
The speakers
This is where it gets interesting, because you have options depending on your room.
The most immersive Atmos experience comes from ceiling-mounted height speakers — dedicated drivers in the ceiling, above and slightly in front and behind your listening position. If you're building a dedicated cinema room or renovating, this is the route to take. We install these regularly for customers throughout West London.
If ceiling installation isn't possible, upward-firing Atmos modules are the practical alternative. These sit on top of your front speakers or are built into certain speaker models, and they bounce sound off the ceiling to create a convincing height effect. Brands like Klipsch, Wharfedale and KEF all produce speakers with integrated Atmos modules.
The basic Atmos speaker layout
A 5.1.2 system — the most popular starting point — looks like this: front left, centre and front right speakers across the front of your screen, a subwoofer for bass, surround left and right at the sides, and two height speakers either in the ceiling or as upward-firing modules. The numbers break down as 5 speakers, 1 subwoofer, 2 height channels.
Do you need to mount speakers on the ceiling?
No — and for most living rooms, you don't want to. Upward-firing Atmos speakers work well in rooms with standard ceiling heights (2.4 to 2.7 metres) and reasonably flat, reflective ceilings. They're also much simpler to install and won't require any building work.
In our cinema room at Hayes we have a full ceiling-mounted setup so customers can hear the difference between the two approaches. Most people find upward-firing speakers more than satisfying for a living room — ceiling-mounted is for the more dedicated installation.
Connecting it all together
Modern AV receivers make this straightforward. HDMI cables from your sources (4K Blu-ray player, streaming box, games console) go into the receiver. One HDMI cable out to your TV. Speaker cables run to each speaker. The receiver does the rest — most now have automatic room calibration systems (Audyssey on Denon and Marantz, YPAO on Yamaha) that measure your room and optimise the sound automatically.
What to expect when it all comes together
The first time you sit down with a properly set-up Atmos system and watch something you know well — a film you've seen a dozen times — is usually a revelatory experience. Not because it's louder, but because it's suddenly dimensional. Sound exists in the room with you rather than coming from a box in front of you.
That's what we try to demonstrate in our cinema room. It's also why we encourage people to come and hear it before committing — because reading about Atmos and hearing it are genuinely different things.
We stock Atmos receivers from Denon, Yamaha and Marantz, and Atmos-capable speaker packages from Klipsch, Wharfedale, KEF and Q Acoustics. All systems are available with 0% finance from £499. Custom ceiling speaker installation is also available — call us on 020 8813 7666 to discuss.
