Home AV Direct · Home Cinema Guide

This is probably the question we get asked most often by people setting up a new living room or moving into a new home. And it's a genuinely good question, because both options are valid — the right answer depends entirely on what you actually want from your home cinema setup.
Let's be honest about both, because a lot of retailer guides aren't.
When a soundbar is the right answer
A soundbar is a great choice if you want better-than-TV audio without cables, boxes, or any complexity. Modern soundbars from brands like Yamaha, Denon and Klipsch have improved enormously in the last few years. A good soundbar — one in the £300 to £700 range — will transform the audio from a flat-panel TV into something genuinely enjoyable for TV programmes, films and casual listening.
If you're renting, if you have limited space, or if the other people in your household aren't particularly interested in a complicated setup, a well-chosen soundbar is a perfectly sensible solution that we're happy to recommend.
What a soundbar cannot do
Here's where we need to be straight with you. A soundbar — even an excellent one with upward-firing drivers and virtual surround processing — cannot replicate what a proper speaker system does in a room. The physics of sound don't allow it.
Dolby Atmos is designed to place sound in three-dimensional space around and above you. To do this properly, you need speakers in those positions — not a box on a shelf bouncing sound off the ceiling and processing it digitally. The experience is fundamentally different, and if you've never heard a properly set-up Atmos system in a real room, you'd be surprised how different.
We see this regularly in our cinema room at Hayes. Customers who own a good soundbar and are happy with it come in for a listen — and most of them come back within a few months for a proper system. Not because we persuade them, but because hearing is believing.
What does a proper home cinema system actually involve?
At its simplest, a genuine surround sound system has an AV receiver at the centre — this is the brain of the system, handling the Dolby Atmos or DTS:X decoding, powering all the speakers, and managing your HDMI sources — and then a set of speakers arranged around the room.
A 5.1 system has five speakers (front left, centre, front right, surround left, surround right) and a subwoofer. A 5.1.2 Atmos system adds two height speakers — either ceiling-mounted or upward-firing modules on top of your front speakers. This is the most popular starting point for genuine Atmos.
What does it cost?
A good entry-level Atmos system — Yamaha or Denon receiver, Klipsch or Wharfedale speakers, a decent subwoofer — comes in at around £1,200 to £1,500 for everything. That's the point where the experience genuinely changes. Below that, a good soundbar makes more sense. Above it, you're getting into territory where films start sounding the way their directors intended.
The honest comparison
Choose a soundbar if:
- You want simplicity and minimal cables
- You're in a rented property or don't want to mount speakers
- Your budget is under £700
- You watch mostly TV and casual streaming rather than films you care about
Choose a proper surround system if:
- Films matter to you and you want to experience them properly
- You're prepared to spend £1,200 or more
- You have a dedicated room or a living room where speaker placement is possible
- You want something that will still satisfy you in five years
One thing we'd suggest
If you're genuinely unsure, come and hear the difference. Our cinema room in Hayes has a full Dolby Atmos setup that we use for exactly this purpose. We can show you what a properly set-up system sounds like and have an honest conversation about whether it's right for your space and budget. There's no pressure — some people hear it and decide a soundbar is still the better fit for their situation, and that's completely fine.
We stock AV receivers from Denon, Yamaha and Marantz alongside speaker packages from Klipsch, Wharfedale, KEF and Q Acoustics — at a range of budgets. Finance is available on selected orders.
